US ‘fomenting discord in Palestine’

The leading Lebanese cleric Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah has accused the US of fomenting discord and political crisis in Palestine.

He made the remark during his recent meeting with Osama Hamdan, a Hamas representative in Lebanon.

The senior Shia cleric urged a dialogue between Fatah and Hamas, calling on them to unite so that the plots hatched by the US and the Zionist Israeli regime would not destroy them.

Israel launches air strikes in Gaza

Israel launched air strikes targeting Palestinian rocket launch sites in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, the first air strikes since Hamas seized control of the territory last week.

Gaza militants earlier fired at least one makeshift rocket into southern Israel, the army said.

Olmert and Bush Discuss Ways to Strengthen Abbas

President Bush and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel tried again today to strengthen the position of the Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas of the Fatah party, describing him as a voice of moderation in the Middle East, in contrast to the rival Hamas party, which they condemned as an extremist group dedicated to violence.
